This photo comes from Texas Island Woods, one of Wisconsin's 634 State Natural Areas (SNA's). These SNA's protect outstanding examples of Wisconsin's native landscape of natural communities, significant geological formations and archeological sites. Texas Island Woods is not an island of land within a body of water, but rather a mature hardwood forest “island” within an extensive complex of marsh, meadow, and shrub swamp. Prominent species include red and white oaks with basswood and sugar maple in some areas. Canopy associates include shagbark hickory, red maple, black cherry, white ash, and green ash. Ironwood is a common sapling along with maple.
