FEBRUARY FOREST FUNGUS
Despite being near the end of winter, this fungus appeared to be in good shape and did not exhibit freeze damage.
Here in the eastern United States we have many different types of fungi. They come in many different colors, sizes and shapes. They usually prefer to grow in rich damp soil or on rotting wood in heavy shade. Most are not heat and drought tolerant. However, we don't see many in the winter either which is why this one caught my eye. They reproduce by shedding spores. Some types are edible while others are deadly poisonous. In the forest they add variety to the true wildflowers which are also colorful and attractive.
