The New Forest was founded by William the Conqueror in 1079 - it was a Royal Hunting Forest, mainly for deer.
Through history it has been conceded by the Crown to local people, called commoners, including the pasturing of donkeys, horses pigs and cattle. It also has provided timber to the Crown.
It is a great place for walking and riding, and has recently been designated a National Park.
It is situated in the south of England near Southampton.
